Moscow Power Engineering Institute currently works at the All-Russian Research, Design and Technological Institute of the Cable Industry (JSC "VNIIKP"); since 2008. He is the director of the scientific direction – head of the department of cables and wires for energy purposes. Since 2012, he has been combining work at JSC VNIIKP with teaching, being a professor at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute. In 1985 he defended his PhD, in 2000. - doctoral dissertation on the topic "Research of high voltage cables, development of advanced methods of electrical calculation and microdiagnostics".

Shuvalov M.Yu. is the author of numerous scientific papers in the field of the theory of aging of electrical insulating materials, on the basis of which new research methods and techniques have been introduced: optical microscopy, micromanipulation and microspectral technology.

With the direct participation and guidance of M.Y. Shuvalov, high-voltage cables with insulation made of cross-linked polyethylene of the second generation were developed and implemented at 5 plants of the Association "Electric Cable", scientific foundations and methods for assessing the quality of electrical insulation systems of high and medium voltage cables were developed. Methods for determining the residual life of cables have been introduced.

Shuvalov M.Yu. is a full member of the Russian Academy of Electrotechnical Sciences and a full member of the National Academy of Fire Safety Sciences. From 2002 to the present, he is a member of the Council for the Defense of doctoral and Candidate dissertations of VNIIKP.

He has published more than 100 articles in scientific and technical literature. He has more than 50 patents for inventions and utility models, a significant part of which are implemented in industry.

Shuvalov M.Yu. has a number of state and industry awards. He is a laureate of the P.N. Yablochkov Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences for outstanding work in the field of electrophysics and electrical engineering. He is included in the biographical reference books "Who is Who" ("Who is who", 2007) and "Who is Who in Science and Engineering" ("Who is who in Science and Engineering", 2008). In 2008 he was included in the list of the 100 best material scientists (according to the international biographical Cambridge University Center, England).
